The challenge

OEM ran a high-mix paint line manually. Transfer efficiency was poor (40%) wasting paint, and customers were rejecting parts on lot-to-lot color variation.

What we built

Two ABB IRB 5500-22 paint robots, electrostatic atomizers, conveyor speed tied to part fixture barcode, and an X-Rite spectrophotometer reading every nth part at the oven exit. Recipe library covers 28 SKUs.

Results

Transfer efficiency up 22 points, color match held at ΔE < 1.2 across SKUs, and customer color rejects fell to a single ppm-level event.
